Snapdragon might lose its throne !
TERSEINFO: Snapdragon has been reigning over all other processor makers. At least, in terms of variety it brings to the table. It’s also because of good platforms which it powers. It has always been at par in its field. But , has always been two steps behind iPhone’s indigenously made ARM’s 64 bit processor. It’s critical time for Snapdragon to save its throne or atleast power better phones(which it is good at) .
A11 Bionic processor is the world’s fastest processor for mobiles:
Everytime iPhone comes with its latest edition , it brings a faster and a better processor. Since 2013, the inception of home built processor has made iPhone a superpower. And Snapdragon just manages to do better, not in terms of speed but in terms of overall efficiency it provides to the user.
APPLE A11 BIONIC PROCESSOR
Apple design processors that use ARM’s 64-bit instruction architecture. That means that Apple’s chips use the same underlying RISC architecture as Qualcomm(snapdragon), Samsung’s Exynos 8895, Huawei Kirin 960 . The fact that Apple holds a license with ARM helped the giant leap forward from its contemporaries. Apple’s first in-house 64-bit ARM processor was the Apple A7 which was used in the iPhone 5S. It had a dual-core CPU, clocked at 1.4 GHz and a quad-core PowerVR G6430 GPU.
The A11 has a hexa-core CPU, using Heterogeneous Multi-Processing (HMP) and an in-house GPU (after Apple decided to stop using Imagination’s GPU).The six CPU cores are made up of two high-performance cores (codenamed Monsoon), and four energy-efficient cores (codenamed Mistral). The A11, magically uses all the cores simultaneously. Well, that’s some extraordinary engineering .
A11 vs Snapdragon 835:
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 consists of 3 billion transistors while Apple A11 bionic chip consists of 4.3 billion transistors that are 1.3 billion more than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835. Apple A11 processor is manufactured on 10nm FinFET technology, and it comes with 30% performance boost, and 50% power efficiency that outdo hardcore performance of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835.Apple A11 bionic chip is 50 to 70 percent faster than Android, and even those powered by Qualcomm’ Snapdragon 835.
Evident from the below proofs that iPhone made a league of its own. As a matter of fact, it also bested MacBook Pro(2017).
Where Qualcomm fell short?
ARM’s cortex A57 was announced in October, 2012 but it wasn’t till 2014 that it powered a smartphone. It was late for Qualcomm to realize that it should build a processor indigenously. Apple , on the other side, was enjoying the success.ARM does the CPU core design for Qualcomm (and others like MediaTek) and Qualcomm designs the chips, which it in turn sells to handset makers like Samsung, Sony, LG, etc.
Apple spends well on its engineers. It doesn’t hesitate to invest. The system on chip (SoC) is excellent and has no competition in vicinity, afterall it costs alot to raise the bar. We won’t see a SoC from Qualcomm, Samsung or Huawei that can beat IPhone’s SoC in raw power. At least, not in near future. Only if someone goes the way Apple opted for i.e., building a CPU with a large surface area and more silicone to handle cache(more expensive) . Apple made it’s place, though it requires extra bucks and might empty your pockets. But it ensures that its user has something best.
